This thing decodes like no one’s business. I run it in external mode on a FTDX10. I have been running in CW mode, and using a 300hz roofing filter and narrow it to 100hz, shift up 500hz to listen at the 1300hz sweet spot of the decoder and it works flawlessly. The manual says to use usb/LSB mode with a wide filter but what I’m doing works perfectly and in crowded band conditions is a must.
Couple minor issues I encountered: I had to troubleshoot included key-in/out cables to find a short. Was due to missing plastic washer to keep the housing ferrule from shorting out the sleeve pin. Also had to re solder the pin (possibly cold solder joint) no big deal really. Just a slight inconvenience. Only one other minor issue, the red led power light was overwhelming my eyes to the point of discomfort. Solution was to put a small piece of super 88 tape over it. I know when it has power without the light, because it will be decoding like a champ when it does :).
In summary I would say this is by far the best cw decoder by miles. Well worth the money. It takes the stress out of cw copy. It gave me the confidence to pick cw up again. So if you’re on the fence as to which cw decoder/transceiver to pick, you won’t be disappointed to roll with this one. A little bit of study on the user manual and some quick micro programming and you’re off to the races.
