The AI Catalyst: How Conversation Amplifies Human Intelligence
The most valuable AI interaction may not deliver an answer. It may help us discover an idea we could never have reached alone.
I recently had an experience working with AI that changed how I think about its value. We were developing a Christmas catalogue advertisement for a product my company makes. By the end, we had a message I was delighted with. But the most important result wasn’t the ad. It was a realization about how creativity happens when a person and an AI work together.
We didn’t know the destination
After we finished the advertisement, the AI complimented our process. It said I knew my product and kept challenging the wording until it communicated exactly what I intended.
That sounded reasonable, but it wasn’t right. I corrected it: I did not know exactly what I wanted before we started. The interaction itself brought out the creativity.
The AI offered ideas, good wording, and occasionally surprising angles. Those suggestions sparked new thinking in me. I responded, challenged assumptions, and proposed changes. Those changes then prompted new suggestions. We weren’t following a map to a known destination; we were discovering the destination as we traveled.
From refinement to discovery
There’s a big difference between refining a predetermined idea and creating something through interaction. Refinement assumes the objective is already clear. Collaboration allows the objective itself to evolve.
Our advertisement provided a concrete example. We began by describing the technical capabilities of a Morse code decoder. Then a new thought emerged: the person reading a Christmas gift catalogue might not be a ham radio operator at all. They might be a spouse looking for something special for someone who loves the hobby. Suddenly, the question changed from ‘How do we explain the technology?’ to ‘How do we help someone choose a gift with confidence?’
That shift wasn’t a minor edit. It changed the audience, the emotional appeal, and the purpose of the message. We found the insight in conversation—not before it.
AI as a catalyst
Two phrases emerged from our exchange that I want to keep: AI as a catalyst for human intelligence, and intellectual amplification.
A catalyst doesn’t simply perform a task in place of something else. It enables a process to unfold differently. In the same way, AI can introduce a possibility that triggers a human insight, which leads to another AI suggestion, which triggers another insight. The value lies in the chain reaction.
This is more interesting than treating AI as an answer machine. Of course, speed matters. Producing a first draft in seconds can be useful. But speed is not the ceiling of the technology’s value. The larger opportunity is to become more imaginative and capable through the exchange.
Why imperfect ideas can be useful
Not every suggestion has to be correct or brilliant. Sometimes an idea that misses the mark is precisely what reveals a better direction. It gives us something to react to. It challenges an assumption we didn’t realize we were making. It opens a door.
That means the best collaboration requires room for disagreement and surprise. The human should feel free to say, ‘No, that’s not quite it,’ and the AI should contribute new possibilities rather than merely echoing the last instruction. Neither participant needs to pretend the outcome is already known.
A different measure of success
We often judge AI by the quality of its first answer. I think we should also ask a more important question: Did the interaction make the human more creative, more insightful, and more capable?
If AI saves me fifteen minutes, that is productivity. If an exchange helps me see a possibility I would otherwise have missed, that is intellectual amplification.
The future I find most exciting is not one in which people stop thinking because machines can answer. It is one in which people think more expansively because they have an inexhaustible partner for exploring ideas.
We start without knowing exactly where we’ll end up. And through the interaction, something new emerges. That, to me, is the real promise of AI as a catalyst.
The future isn't just artificial intelligence. It's amplified human intelligence.
